SETUP GUIDE
Microsoft Office Setup on Mac: Start-to-Finish Checklist
Prepare macOS, install Office from Microsoft, grant needed permissions, and activate Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Office setup on a Mac is straightforward when the license, macOS version, storage, and sign-in account are checked first.
Prepare the Mac
Install current macOS updates supported by your Mac, keep several gigabytes of free space, and close other installers. Confirm that your Microsoft 365 or Office license appears in the account you plan to use.
Install and activate
- Sign in to Microsoft and download the Mac installer associated with your license.
- Open the downloaded .pkg file from Downloads.
- Follow the installer and enter the Mac administrator password when macOS requests authorization.
- Open Word from Applications and choose Sign in to activate.
- Use the account linked to the subscription, purchase, or organization license.
Permissions and updates
Office may request access to files, contacts, microphone, or camera only when a feature needs it. Review permissions in System Settings rather than approving everything automatically. Open an Office app and use Help > Check for Updates to install current fixes.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Office keep asking me to sign in?
Check that the licensed account is selected. Persistent prompts can involve saved credentials in macOS Keychain; use Microsoft’s Mac activation guidance before removing entries.
Can Windows and Mac use the same subscription?
Many Microsoft 365 plans support both, subject to the plan’s device and sign-in limits.
