SETUP GUIDE
Activate Microsoft Office After Installation
Fix common Office activation prompts by checking the account, license, internet connection, and installed edition.
Activation verifies that the installed apps match a valid license. In most consumer installations, activation happens after you open an app and sign in with the account connected to the product.
Basic activation flow
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select Sign in or Activate when prompted.
- Use the account shown under Services & subscriptions for home purchases, or the assigned work or school account.
- Accept the license agreement and restart the app if requested.
- Open Account inside the app and confirm the product is activated.
When activation fails
First check the internet connection and computer date and time. Then sign out of extra Office accounts and sign back in with the licensed one. A wrong edition can also cause a mismatch—for example, installing a volume-license build for a retail account.
Protect your account
Do not use scripts that bypass activation. They can violate license terms and introduce malware. If a device limit is reached, manage devices through your Microsoft account rather than sharing passwords or keys.
Frequently asked questions
Does activation require a product key?
Not always. If the license is already linked to an account, signing in is usually sufficient.
Can I activate without internet?
Some editions have special methods, but current consumer subscriptions normally require online sign-in. Follow the instructions for your exact license.
